The Garage Biennale Internship Opportunities, Summer and Fall 2008

The experience provides an introduction to the world of contemporary art, professional exhibition practices, and training in numerous aspects of researching, planning, and mounting event-based exhibitions.

Two internship opportunities will be offered this year, one in the summer in regards to pre planning and exhibition design, and another in exhibition management.

Duties focus on the following areas:

1. Research: assisting with exhibition and project research in libraries, via the Internet, by telephone, and correspondence.

2. Archiving: assisting with compiling and maintaining of exhibition, project, and installation photography archives.

3. Data entry and proposal maintenance: assisting with entry of artist and exhibition proposals into existing database, preparing meeting reports, facilitating meetings, and drafting follow-up letters.

4. Correspondence: assisting with departmental correspondence, including mailings, individual communication, faxes, and email.

5. Exhibition and departmental support: providing general support for many aspects of the exhibition process; assisting with exhibition checklist preparation; and general departmental clerical support.

Summer Internships

The internships will begin around June 16, 2008 continuing until the end of the summer semester, with a local and international focus.

Summer internship responsibilities will include providing support for exhibition planning on a local and international basis. Duties will include providing support at organizational meetings, drafting writing for the website and print materials, and presenting research to the curatorial staff. Strong writing and research skills are a plus.

Fall Internships

Fall internships will begin around September 5, 2008 and continue until the end of the semester, with a largely local focus.

Responsibilities include providing support for installations, and exhibitions. Duties will include, hanging art, moving objects like TV’s and pedestals. Also, must be able to work a digital still and video camera to document the exhibitions. Photoshop skills are a plus. Must be able to life 50 lbs overhead. Having own vehicle a plus.

All prospective interns will be interviewed by a member of The Garage staff.
